Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
It’s horrible, nobody’s denying that, but its hard to be empathetic when you equate your isolated incident to centuries upon centuries of degradation, rape, genocide, colonialism, imperialism etc. etc. that we and our ancestors have experienced.
To do so is ridiculous and insulting, especially when there are other words, such as prejudice that are less loaded and more appropriate.
Comparing what you went through as an individual to what we’ve gone through everyday for the past several centuries is wrong and ineffectual; its like having a rash and getting mad at the burn unit in the hospital for not treating you for it.
Because the Picts weren’t enslaved, slaughtered, and pillaged by the Roman Empire. Because the 12th century English church didn’t force a loss of religion, language or cultural identity on the Picts and Gaels. Because the Welsh kingdoms weren’t broken up, the women tortured and raped, the men forced into the bottoms of slave ships along side Africans and shipped to the Caribbean where they worked as slaves. Because the Scotsweren’t slaughtered by the Butcher of Bristol. Because the English didn’tforce the Scotch, Irish and Welsh overseas with colonial enslavement andreligious persecution. Because they didn’t have to give up their identitiesand generational family names at Ellis Island. Because The Scotch-Irishweren’t arrested, persecuted, forced out of jobs and homes in the industrial revolution of the United States. Because the Irish weren’t prevented from having a vote in Parliament, but still had to pay taxes. Because the Easter Rising wasn’t put down by British police breaking into homes andslaughtering and raping the women and children of protesting workers. Because hate against those with red hair is not a cultural standard. Because even in 2012, the nation of Ireland isn’t split into two parts, half of which lacks representation in government, but still pays taxes. Because none of that ever happened, Discrimination against White people is not Racism.
